IGNITING THE FLAME OF UNITY

THE HISTORY OF THE

 BRIGHTON BRANCH OF A.S.L.E.F.

Welcome to the history of the

Brighton Branches of A.S.L.E.F.

 “We wunt be druv”

The motto asserts

That people from Sussex have minds of their own, and cannot be forced against their will, or told what to do.

Over many years much has been written about the various forms of traction that operated in and around the Brighton area.

But very little has been documented about the footplate-men who actually worked on them.

This web site tries to remedy this as it seeks to explain the history of

Brighton’s footplatemen and the various footplate grades and the creation of the Brighton branch of the train driver’s union,

ASLEF – the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers & Firemen.

This web site is dedicated to all ASLEF members who have worked at our depots over the years, and it features ASLEF members who brought our Brighton trains to life.

This website features articles that have appeared in A.S.L.E.F.'s Locomotive Journal, extracts from A.S.L.E.F. Branch minutes books, stories from the footplate and extracts from other publications. This will hopefully try and explain the history of A.S.L.E.F. and footplatemen & women at these depots, which are feature on this website.
